2014 was the thirteenth year since Aaliyah's passing. She would have turned thirty-five that year on January 16.
Over the summer of this year, there was confirmation made about Lifetime choosing to make a biopic about Aaliyah. Though Zendaya had initially been set to play her, she dropped out of the film after the negative attention it gathered from fans and Aaliyah's family, who believed she should be honored in a film released in theaters. Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B was released in November to universally negative reviews.
