Rihanna is an American barbadian singer and actress. She was discovered at the age of 16 and signed by Jay-Z to his record label after auditioning for him. She admitted to being star-struck at him. Rihanna released her debut album Music of the Sun in 2005 and she and Chris Brown became friends during this period.

Rihanna's seventh studio album Unapologetic was released in November 2012, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200. It sold 238,000, making it the first number one Rihanna had in the United States.

Rihanna was supposed to be the featured artist on Pitbull's song "Timber", as revealed by the rapper in November 2013. She was not able to be the featured artist on his song due to having already been asked to be featured artist on Shakira's first single from her self-titled album Shakira. The first single, Can't Remember to Forget You, was released from the album on January 13, 2014.

Around the time of the collaboration with Shakira being released, Rihanna was announced to have started recording her eighth album. In late-February 2014, Jeffrey Katzenberg announced that Rihanna would record a concept album based around the film Home, which she starred in alongside Jennifer Lopez and Steve Martin.
